Take Action at School!

Students in school, is our most precious resource because not only can they influence friends and family but they're the ones who are going to inherit this mess we've left for them. So who has a better right to make the rest of us listen and start making changes to clean the mess up? So, here's some ideas to get this all started.

We're constantly looking for other ideas to add to this list please let us know if you know any. If you do and we use it we will give you credit and list you on our friends of the earth list.

Here’s how:

1. Watch An Inconvenient Truth

2. Ride a Bike - Reduce the number of miles you drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possible
Avoiding just 10 miles of driving every week would eliminate about 500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions a year! Look for transit options in your area.

3.

Replace School Lightbulbs

Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (cfl) - CFLs use 60% less energy than a regular bulb. This simple switch will save about 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. If every family in the U.S. made the switch, we’d reduce carbon dioxide by more than 90 billion pounds! You can purchase CFLs online from the Energy Federation.

4.

No Idling!

The goal of an anti-idling campaign is to reduce the levels of unnecessary vehicle idling in your community as a means to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. These measures will help to reduce the impacts of climate change and air quality and related health issues. You need to establish key objectives that will help you meet your goal.

5. Use Recycled Paper - Use Recycled Paper
Make sure your printer paper is 100% post consumer recycled paper. Save 5 lbs. of carbon dioxide per ream of paper.

6. Cut Back on Paper

7. Educate Your Parents

8. Take Action at Home

9. No Waste at School Meals and Events

10. Plant a Tree - Plant a tree
A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Shade provided by trees can also reduce your air conditioning bill by 10 to 15%. The Arbor Day Foundation has information on planting and provides trees you can plant with membership.

11. Conduct a School Energy Audit
Many utilities offer 'free' School Energy audits to find where your School is poorly insulated or energy inefficient. You can save up to 30% off your energy bill and 100,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Energy Star can help you find an energy specialist.

14. Speak Out
